emmanuelle moureaux creates vibrant installation using mt’s masking tape

tokyo-based french architect and artist emmanuelle moureaux unveils yet another colorful installation, this time for the world-famous japanese masking tape brand ‘mt’. using 6,000 thin masking tape strips and applying her unique 100 different shades of colors, moureaux has formed an immersive world of vibrant intersecting lines. the installation was created on the occasion of the memorable 10th mt factory tour, an exhibition held once a year to showcase the infinite possibilities of mt’s masking tape, which is made of traditional japanese paper washi.

an immersion of layered lines and overlapping colors

for the installation, emmanuelle moureaux decided to use the most familiar masking tape with a width of 15 mm. the tape was specially created for the project in the artist’s unique colorway which consists of 100 different tones. the piece was composed of thousands of thin lines, regularly layered vertically and diagonally, creating an immersive colorful space. visitors can walk through a cut-out tunnel to experience the color gradation and its overlapping effects — the various shades and lines overlap and change depending on the viewing angle, creating a rainbow moiré of various expressions. walking through this mesmerizing path, made up of a total of 28 km length masking tape, people forgot time and enjoyed colors with their entire body.
