chris collaris architects intertwines indoor & outdoor living

Within a residential expansion area in Son en Breugel, the southern Netherlands, the Lime Wash House embodies pure materialization and a spatial organization plan that fosters a dialogue of connectivity with the surrounding garden. Crafted by Chris Collaris Architects, this family home blends clear form characteristics with a distinct white lime wash brick facade and an overhanging roof with large extensions that nestles the home and defines the structure against the modest streetscape. A defining characteristic of the project, the roof extends the usable volume of the upper floors, shelters dry walkways on the sides, and provides an inviting entrance. Enhancing functionality, the roof further forgoes gutters and channels rainwater directly into the garden’s flower beds.

‘lime wash house’ is punctuated by a large overhanging roof

Chris Collaris Architects have punctuated the Lime Wash House’s facade and roof with a strategic arrangement of various openings that forge connections between the structure and the garden. In the heart of the Brainport Area at Sonniuspark, the Dutch practice has positioned the house the middle of its plot, embracing it with the garden which creates a barrier between adjacent plots and provides pleasant spaces throughout the day where indoor and outdoor living can intertwine.

Stepping inside, the south-facing living room is infused with abundant natural light and connected to the front garden, while a green entrance on the east side welcomes inhabitants to pass through the roof. On the north side, a sunken sitting area in the garden invites outdoor relaxation, as the northwest corner opens up completely and enables the dining room and outdoor terrace to become one. Designed by Frank Heijligers, the garden mirrors the house’s layout, offering diverse plantings and a logical connection to the architectural design.

With a modest ground floor footprint, the Lime Wash House enhances the spatial experience by fostering interactivity between the interior and exterior spaces. ‘In this way, the organization and layout of the house works the same as the garden outside: the open design invites you to discover new places in the house at different times of the day,’ notes the team at Chris Collaris Architects. The central staircase serves as the organizing core, arranging bedrooms, a bathroom, and study across the house and opening connections to surrounding spaces. Two roof extensions further amplify the available space, flooding the bathroom and attic study on the first floor’s east side with light.
