Good things may come to an end, and that’s definitely the case for Champion’s new biodegradable sweatshirt and joggers designed to decompose over time. The Eco Future Reverse Weave collection has an expiration date. It doesn’t mean to last long; it is meant to be worn repeatedly until its materials break down from having been worn so often. Champion’s Eco Future Reverse Weave is crafted with CiCLO, an in-house, eco-friendly technology designed to speed up the natural breakdown of materials used to produce the sweatshirts and joggers.

Ciclo technology breaks down biodegradable clothes

Champion’s Eco Future Reverse Weave collection with CiCLO technology is made to try and reduce the impact of plastic textile fibers on the environment. It is an in-house solution thought of and used by the brand to reduce plastic microfiber pollution by accelerating the microbes’ ability to break down polyester and nylon materials instilled into the clothing. As Champion explains, its CiCLO technology is an additive mixed into the making of its biodegradable sweatshirts and joggers.

It is combined with materials like polyester and nylon, and Champion mixes it in when these materials are being made into fibers. Once they are heated, they turn into a liquid-like form, which is then transformed into long threads. This process is called melt extrusion. Champion explains that its CiCLO technology helps synthetic textiles like polyester and nylon behave more like natural fibers so that they can break down over time and go back to nature.

Sweater and joggers with upcycled fruit rinds

Champion continues to be eco-conscious with the other elements of its biodegradable Eco Future Reverse Weave sweatshirts and joggers. For instance, the tags and labels on this clothing line are made from pure cotton, and the collection’s paper hangtags are printed using soy inks made from soybeans to make them more environmentally friendly than traditional inks.

Even the colors of the biodegradable sweatshirts and joggers are made from dyes derived from nature. Champion’s idea is to use what nature provides. In this case, they upcycle remnants of some of nature’s crops. For the dyes of its Eco Future Reverse Weave collection, the design team uses extracts from pomegranate rinds, annatto, Terminalia Chebula fruit crusts, and kerria lacca insects.
