Lucas Maino Fernandez unveils ‘guest house’

Located on the Isla Grande de Chiloé in Chile, Lucas Maino Fernandez’s rustic Guest House sits at the intersection of public and private within a single structure. Embracing the evolving landscape of rental technologies, the project offers its clients a new stream of economic income by providing the opportunity to share their living space as a guest lodging. The design resolves this by transforming the structure’s western, northern, and southern facades into a semi-external corridor enveloped by a wooden lattice that connects the interior and exterior environments, while also serving as a unified entrance to both the private residence and guest accommodations. Meanwhile, the remaining side is left to embrace expansive views of the Chilean landscape.

Guest House is sited on a relatively flat, 5,000 square meter plot of land, adjoining neighboring isolated dwellings to its north, south, and west. On its eastern side, it embraces picturesque views of the inland sea of Chiloé, extending beyond to the Andes Mountain range in the continental Chile territory. These geographic conditions significantly influence the building’s orientation, directing its view in one direction which in turn exposes privacy concerns for both residents and neighbors along the three remaining edges of the house. Addressing this, architect Lucas Maino Fernandez has positioned a connective corridor that enables inhabitants to interact with their environment, while allowing both public and private realms to coexist.

The design concept proposes a single volume that rises three meters from the ground and offers a thoughtful response to the dual demands of residential living and guest accommodation. Housing two distinct programs that coexist seamlessly, one third of the Guest House holds the private residential sector, while the remaining two-thirds are dedicated to the lodgings. Each zone has an independent access point located on opposite sides, which are joined by the semi-external corridor. The guest section comprises two rooms, each with a private bathroom and a communal space integrated with a living, dining, and kitchen area. On the ground floor, the design incorporates practical amenities including washing facilities, storage spaces, and three covered parking spots.

The project’s materiality embraces an understated finish and rustic aesthetic, wrapped in a semi-translucent envelop comprising IPV pine along the facade, and employing horizontally and vertically arranged pine boards within the interior. The floors feature dry brushed pine, and the pillars are crafted from Luma, further accentuating the organic charm of the space and exuding a warm and natural ambiance that brings the outdoors in.
